The Minnesota Vikings have agreed a three-year, $60million deal with former Commanders star Jonathan Allen.

The two-time Pro Bowler was expected to be one of the most coveted defensive tackles on the market, having been released by Washington last week.

Now the Vikings have secured a deal for Allen. Minnesota confirmed the news on Tuesday, revealing that Allen arrived in the Twin Cities on Monday.

Allen was selected by the Commanders in the first round of the 2017 draft and had spent his entire professional career in the nation’s capital.

The former Alabama star, who stands at 6ft 3ins and 300lbs, played in 11 games in the 2024 season as the Commanders reached the NFC Championship.

Allen signed a four-year, $72million contract extension with the Commanders back in 2021. It included an average salary of $18m a year with $35.6m guaranteed.

But Washington decided to cut Allen after the team failed to find a trade partner for the defensive tackle.

Earlier this month, according to ESPN, the 30-year-old was given permission to find a trade after Washington decided not to new his contract.

His deal with Minnesota comes a day after the Vikings saw former quarterback Sam Darnold agree a three-year, $100.5m contract with the Seattle Seahawks.

The 27-year-old quarterback enjoyed the finest season of his career as he led Minnesota to the playoffs.

Darnold was linked with a number of teams ahead of the 2025 campaign, including the Las Vegas Raiders, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New York Jets.

But now Darnold is heading to Seattle to replace Geno Smith in a deal that includes $55m guaranteed.
